That would be cool because I didn't research due to last hour lack of time.
Because it only affects the environment of the subshell, which does nothing else and exits. Try os.environ["foo"]="bar".

Alternatively you could combine all the system(...) calls into one with ';', that would work. Or just use a shell script?
