Would you recommend something else? I need a minimal UI for an initramfs (on Linux/x86), ideally usable from Python.

Something like what TWRP does on android (maybe I should look at their code)... basically for a small recovery tool.

That seems like overkill (and I need to be able to patch the FB code to work; this thing needs dirty rect flush ioctls)
-
Basically I just want something I can use to display a few boxes/toggles/menus :-) (embedded touch KB would be a bonus)

Yeah, I'm just wondering if there's something supported that either lets me plug a backend or doesn't take ages to compile.
-
Trying to avoid maintaining a random fork/patchset for a large UI toolkit to make it support my backend.

I'll give it a look; no reason to shy away from it for being old code if it's good code :-)

Yeah, I read about that bit. Unconventional, but I don't see anything wrong with that (from my POV).
-
Of course, I don't care much either, because I'm going to be using a single app. But if it helps with the Python bit that's good.
