Did you actually manage to somehow convert ia64->x86_64, or was that mostly reinstalling keeping /etc and world and such?

The box I mentioned actually got installed in 2003 as 32-bit, but I count the conversion to 64-bit as a reinstall (kept /etc though).

IIRC cp -a / /mnt/new; CHOST=... emerge --root=/mnt/new --empty-tree world;... Then scripted hunting for any leftover ia64 ELFs.
