@marcan42 @grsecurity One day you will all realize that a lot of this is due to C just giving you way too much rope to hang yourselves with

@pmarreck @marcan42 @grsecurity please tell me when you are finished porting the Linux kernel to Rust, Golang or node.js ;)

@marver @pmarreck @grsecurity Can't write kernels in Golang or node, but I'm considering Rust for my next bare metal kernel-like project.

@marcan42 sure you can, in fact, Go used to ship with a bare-metal runtime.

@aramh From what I've seen, the current codebase is far from the point where that would work.

@marcan42 Speaking from the experience of porting it to two architectures and two operating systems, I assure you that is not the case.

@aramh So how do I compile Go code in freestanding mode, in a way that will work on an OS-less system? Rust can do that.

@marcan42 you have to revive the bare-metal target. it's not there yet, but it's relatively trivial to resurrect, one or two days of work.

@aramh How does it deal with lack of GC? Last I checked Go pretty heavily depended on that.

@marcan42 But you do have a GC, unless I misunderstand what you mean.

@aramh Let me put it this way: can I compile Go code for a microcontroller with 32KiB of RAM and no MMU?

@marcan42 No, not with current runtime, too little RAM. But the lack of MMU is no problem. You can probably get away with 256-512kB of RAM.

@marcan42 If you're willing to do the work, you can implement a custom small runtime.
