      Apple introduced per-device firmware signing (SHSH blobs) in the iPhone 3GS to stop people from downgrading (as a jailbreaking deterrent).

      @marcan42 can you extract SHSH blobs from a backup? It's certainly been possible to jailbreak devices after the 3GS.

      @chrisFnicholson You can't downgrade an iPhone to an older, jailbreak-vulnerable version (unless you have the matching SHSH blob).

      @marcan42 right, so my question is: can you get those blobs off of an iCloud backup, or do you need the unlocked device?

      @chrisFnicholson You need a jailbroken device to extract the blobs as far as I know. Definitely not in the backup.

      @chrisFnicholson Alternatively you can request them from Apple's server *at the time that version was actually current*, but not post-facto.

      @marcan42 I mean, it's a signed version of iOS created by Apple. Point is, I don't think apple's language was misleading on its face.
