I reported broken bitbang mode to
@FTDIChip years ago, with examples. Their response via apps engineer was downright insulting. Never used their chips since. -
Their errata implies it's fixed in a newer revision, but that newer revision doesn't exist. Their workaround is to run at clock divider 1, which of course doesn't work because you can't feed in data fast enough over USB for that. Useless.

Tl;Dr simply never use
@FTDIChip in your design.@siliconlabs and (for more powerful chips than USB/UART)@CypressSemi have some great USB interfaces. -
What do you recommend as USB-JTAG interface? xc3sprog supports FTDI chips out of the box.
