FTDI FT232RL vs. clone, bitbang mode, 38kHz square wave. CH1 is the original, CH2 is the clone. Oh, the irony.pic.twitter.com/QiqLxYfxIi

. @FTDIChip why are you trying so hard to screw over customers who chose the superior clone chips over your shoddy "genuine" silicon?

.@marcan42 With the wide availability of inexpensive micros having USB interfaces, I don't think I need @FTDIChip products any more.

@marcan42 so the clone performs better than the original?

@flameeyes Yup. The original has totally fucked clocking (known bug, never fixed, no usable workaround).

I reported broken bitbang mode to @FTDIChip years ago, with examples. Their response via apps engineer was downright insulting. Never used their chips since.

Their errata implies it's fixed in a newer revision, but that newer revision doesn't exist. Their workaround is to run at clock divider 1, which of course doesn't work because you can't feed in data fast enough over USB for that. Useless.

Tl;Dr simply never use @FTDIChip in your design. @siliconlabs and (for more powerful chips than USB/UART) @CypressSemi have some great USB interfaces.

What do you recommend as USB-JTAG interface? xc3sprog supports FTDI chips out of the box.
