      @urherenow Or I could've just used robocopy to begin with, or any other number of ways. What's your point? ntfsresize should've worked.

      @urherenow "make image; restore image" (assuming that would work for shrinking the FS at all) isn't more steps than "ntfsresize; dd".

      @urherenow Sure, but I don't carry around TrueImage on a USB stick (nor am I going to buy it for this). I do carry around SystemRescueCD.

      @urherenow You use the tools you know. The tools I know should've worked. Someone also pointed out Windows can do the resize too.

      @urherenow Thing is, saying "you should've done it <alternate way>" isn't really helpful. Both ways are valid and both should've worked.

      @urherenow Yeah, well, I was hating ntfsresize's guts and hating mine for not doing a stupid file copy backup first. Felt terrible.

      @urherenow Ironically, though, had I done a file copy backup, I would've just said "sorry buddy, got your data but you need to reinstall"
