      Is it odd that I can instantly spot that horrible 1kHz buzz caused by cheap USB soundcards even in professional videos? USB sucks for audio.

      @marcan42 Poorly isolated digital signals. (Almost) nothing to do with USB.

      @doragasu USB puts audio-frequency currents on the ground pin. There's very little getting around it with unbalanced audio and loops.

      @marcan42 You can go self powered and isolate the grounds. Even going bus powered, careful power filtering+isolation can remove the noise.

      @doragasu Nearly no other modern protocol has this problem, because almost everything else is DC-balanced to well above audio frequencies.

      @doragasu Worse, USB's single-ended signaling puts bus power (can be LF-filtered easily) and data current return (cannot) on the same pin.

      @marcan42 With a careful design, that problem can also be avoided. E.g. nowadays most high SNR (120+dB) ADCs have just only a ground pin.

      @doragasu If the grounds are joined, a loop back to the PC (e.g. via mixer to audio jack) makes USB data current return through audio wiring

      @doragasu Things work if you have just one USB card and no earth loop back to the host PC, but complete the loop and you get the noise.

          @marcan42 That's 100% correct, but most USB audio setups I know do not have earth loopbacks to the host PC (e.g. USB headsets).

          @doragasu Oh, absolutely. USB audio is OK for headsets. It's not OK if you plan to connect it to anything but maybe ungrounded speakers.
