      Assume ALL devices are brickable by evil code unless proven otherwise. This isn't news. Most devices make no attempt to protect themselves.

      .@marcan42 Do you know if the problematic commands require admin access to send on common OSes, or can normal users send them too?

      . @simonlbn @marcan42 I know for a fact that for some USB devices, libusb access from user on Linux is enough to access firmware.

      @flameeyes For essentially all, but that's conditional on having usbdev access to begin with. I don't think all distros do that?

      @flameeyes I mean, I do of course; I mess around with USB devices too often not to just give myself blanket usb group access :-)

      @marcan42 yeah but I've seen plenty that give the console user full access before. Would be surprised if it doesn't happen again.

      @flameeyes I think the kernel has filtering for FW commands on SCSI devs (need access to burn discs). No such thing possible for USB devs :(

          @marcan42 it does filtering by command because they are standardized (and anything not recognized is considered privileged)...
