      Also: For a few months now, I’ve been budgeting for a new iPad Air/Pro. But now I’m probably buying a MacBook Air M1 instead. The price is pretty nice, but I honestly think it can last at least 5y like my previous MacBook.

      It is possible to boot from USB. I have a hard drive in the closet containing a full bootable backup of my Mac.

      Apple Silicon devices have a, by default, tightly controlled boot process similar to iOS. The bootloader is also quite dumb and cannot actually boot from external media. Internal storage (the SSD) is tightly coupled to parts of the boot process.

      It is not possible to boot from USB. They fake it by copying stuff from USB into internal storage when you do that.

      You aren't booting from USB, you're booting from internal storage with the filesystem on USB.

          However, those USB installs are not properly potable across Macs. I would not recommend doing that (even though it might work to some extent) with current versions of macOS. I think the whole external boot thing is kind of buggy and rushed right now.

          This is for Apple Silicon. Intel Macs can boot from USB.
