I'm looking for chat platforms for Asahi Linux, and my conclusion is slowly leaning towards "IRC is terrible, and everything else is worse".
Requirements: open protocol, data portability, cloud hosted (but option to self-host).

One thing that *might* end up happening is dev chat on IRC, user chat on Discord, or something along those lines.

I used gitter for a project once awhile back and found it fairly usable. I think gitlab open sourced it after they acquired it, but I'm not sure if the state of the IRC bridge is in order.

Plus discord or slack = unsearchable context / history without access to the service directly. IRC or forums both can be available off server and searchable.

“ enough people I care about would never use it” That’s a management issue, not a technical issue. Find a way to get them to use it.

Alternative or modified clients are a TOS violation, and some objections are with the platform as a whole.
