Someone just please clone Discord. Don't try to do anything different. Just rip off the entire model and UX into an open source app. Then stick an IRC gateway in front. Then we can solve this problem already.

Matrix is a consensus protocol / replicated database with a chat system stuck on top. I think that counts as "doing something different" :p

I’m curious because I’ve contemplated doing something like this because I hate the UX of other platforms. I’m assuming the protocol security and privacy minimum is just TLS SASL irc connection. Alternatively could just make it a client like pidgin.

I actually tried to make a “smarter” IRC client back in 2013 (image previews, code previews, etc.). Alas, it never really went anywhere, which I sorta regret now. Maybe time to pick it up again?https://github.com/GEMISIS/IRC-Client …
