So I just learned that the basis of wifi, bluetooth and some miltary technologies was invented by actress Hedy Lamar, who also advised Howard Hughes on how to make better airplane wings. She was not compensated for her patent/invention.

My understanding was that the original 802.11-1997 used FHSS. Everything more recent is DSSS or OFDM I believe.

FHSS is definitely in a 802.11 standard I was reading through at one point. Wasn't sure if it was used, though.

Huh, TIL. Apparently that early standard was such a non-interoperable mess that it prompted 802.11b and the Wi-Fi trademark/certification, which were intended to fix it (and dropped FHSS in the process).
