Ow! I always hated having to untangle blocks. I always used to treat this as a "update more often, you fool" sign. ;) Does stripping out the orphaned packages help? Once in a blue moon I was lucky enough to find that just unmerging orphaned dependencies cleared blocks.
Yeah, I only had to get rid of some old python2.7-only junk and an obsolete Plasma package to clear the blocks this time. That's usually how it goes these days. Emerge is smart enough to solve most blocks you aren't explicitly requesting.
