I'm 4 reboots into updating this Mac and this is all giving me severe Windows vibes. "About 10 minutes remaining..." I thought half the point of this APFS system volume stuff was that updates would just be flipping a snapshot... Even Android and Nintendo figured this one out.

Wait until you can’t boot it at all because the APFS volume was corrupted. BSOD all over again.
I already shrunk it and the process complained of errors (fresh machine here). Already saw a mac die due to APFS crapping out and had to do data recovery for a friend a few months ago... I guess it's a good thing I'm putting a real OS on this thing ;)

It gets better once you realize you are stuck on the newer recovery and that comes with more lockdown bs. Im 99.999% positive Catalina beta was what ruined my iMac5k and required a new logic board.

That is a well known issue that Catalina update corrupts T2 firmware, and the same with Big Sur. Take a look to Louis Rossmann video that explains it:https://youtu.be/9tQVQUd94Aw
