Third time this year I last minute drop out of a thing due to mild physical symptoms (95% chance it's nothing, but I'm not putting people at 5% risk).

I envy your geographic location now more than ever. It seems like from afar that both the government AND people actually take the pandemic seriously. Moderate social and commercial inconveniences are nothing compared to the health and wellbeing of yourself and others.
Well... A lot of people are doing business as usual, companies are *terrible* at implementing remote work, the government thought it'd be a brilliant idea to run a program sponsoring internal tourism and eating out and here we are in the middle of a third wave now.

What saved Japan is *everyone* wears a mask, people actually bother with basic hygiene / sanitization, basic social distancing is in place restaurants (reduced occupancy), and plastic screens are used in front of most cashiers.

One of my daughters was on a two week student exchange in Jan/Feb which turned out to be great for so many reasons not least of which is that she learned first hand about being conscientious about hygiene/sanitization and wearing a mask. It set a good example for our family here.
