it was the dsi. the 3ds engine had the same dumb partial key overwrite bug though but I don't remember if the secret was similar as well

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as that's only ONE of them and there are other functions in play as well, that's... not terrible? It's a nice Nothing Up My Sleeve number. It's certainly amusing.

This was a key obfuscation function. The security of that is predicated on 1) the constant/construction not being guessable, and 2) the output not being extractable. "Nintendo Co Ltd" is not great for 1, and implementing the partial key overwrite bug is not great for 2.
