By the way, I'm not sure why people are surprised that Nintendo monitored public IRC channels, forums, and presentations. Outrage over stalking neimod to his home I get, but that part? Come on, of *course* they have people looking into public discussion. Those weren't DMs.
Like this is security response 101, you monitor any public channels for any info about upcoming releases or what people are working on, and if anything helps you respond earlier, then you win. The point where they crossed the line was with the direct, physical targeting.
Reminds me of when I was hosting the gbdev mailing list. It’s good to assume your public discussions aren’t private. Captain obvious and all, but it seems some people need to be reminded.
that I get, but there's 2 things that bother me: 1: you mentioned it already, but the stalking 2: reading the thing made me feel like I was reading an FBI report on a wanted criminal, it's worded so creepily it actually makes me uncomfortable
Agreed; I'm just saying the chat logs part is... entirely normal. Some people are painting it as if Nintendo hacked someone's DMs or something.
Yeeeah, my takeaway from all this "Nintendo ninja" stuff after seeing several people attempt to summarize it properly is... well, the kids don't know what IRC is anymore, and I am sadface.
