So is it mostly a heating problem? You can't have the same sodimms (same bus/voltage/frequency) on a socket because of the length of the traces on the pcb? Also, does the same thing go for soldered cpus and their sockets?
Yes. The longer the line the higher the capacitance. The higher the capacitance the more current is required to drive it at a given speed. The higher the current the higher the power consumption. The same thing goes for everything, but what matters is the interface.
So not the component, but how it connects to everything else. The connection between the CPU and RAM is the biggest offender because it's so wide. The CPU socket and RAM socket and DIMM PCB and motherboard PCB all contribute to that.
