Sure, but the want for this ultimately boils down to money. People don't want to be taken advantage of by RAM markups and want the benefits of not needing more RAM until later in the computer's life
No, it boils down to do you want your laptop to last 30% less on battery or not. You can complain all you want about manufacturers marking up the RAM, but that's not *why* they're soldering it down. That's just the marketing guys taking advantage of engineering decisions.
I like being able to upgrade my RAM too, but I wouldn't buy a laptop with a significant battery life hit just for that.

Visualize the entire signal path in 3D, from the CPU die to the RAM die, including carriers and packages and any PCBs and things in the way. That'll give you a good idea of the cost of the interconnect.
