And by the way, for the repairability folks: replaceable RAM on mobile devices is going away for good reason. Two SODIMMs is 128 bits of multi-GHz bus across multiple cm of board and a connector. That *eats* power. This isn't manufacturers being out to screw us, it's physics.

I like being able to upgrade my RAM too, but I wouldn't buy a laptop with a significant battery life hit just for that.

). Anyway, was really wondering if socketed chips would be significantly better than PCBs or a useless intermediary -
Visualize the entire signal path in 3D, from the CPU die to the RAM die, including carriers and packages and any PCBs and things in the way. That'll give you a good idea of the cost of the interconnect.
