You know, I hope conferences continue to do the online thing from now on. Flying out to the other side of the world is a PITA, and the cost-benefit tends to tilt towards "nah" unless I really like the event. But sit at home in front of a camera? Sure, why not.
Either you're all on low latency connections (tends to work well enough within one smallish country or two, if the ISPs aren't terribad) or you do a special "looped jamming" thing where you're jamming on top of everyone else's last 16 bars or whatever.

I've tried the former, and it works well enough within one city, one end on VDSL and the other on FTTH; haven't tried longer.

The trick is you lag your local playing too. Then you can feel the latency, but your brain learns to compensate; but it keeps everyone together.

I stopped doing loop jamming and only play realtime with latency. I’m west coast US and on fiber, and get 20-30ms with players in san diego, vancouver, even colorado or texas. Theres a bassist in new york on fiber that I get 40-50ms with, and he anticipates well enough to 1/2

Play in time with my drumming if I anticipate as well. In general you have to keep everyone down to 20-30ms to make it work. My local band is all within 30-40 miles from each other and if I run my own server, we get 15-20ms, which is like playing on a large stage

Being able to anticipate and play ahead of the tempo is key and takes experience. It’s like being a pipe organist, or playing in a large orchestra, over time your brain can compensate for the delay. Melodic instruments like voice/lead guitar can get away with looser timing 3/

But back to my original point, I can imagine post covid starting up a funk band with the rhythm section rehearsing in my studio with local horn players participating remotely. Bringing in guest musicians for one or two songs without them having to travel
