I've never been a big fan of Apple, except maybe during a brief time during their PowerPC period. But the M1 chip may be so attractive that, given that Linux will be available for it, I might finally be interested in owning Apple hardware for the first time in my life.

"Everyone should have the right to use whatever hardware they want or choose to buy with whatever software they want." This is exactly the point for open technologies: to facilitate this, the information about how to use that hardware should be public. Should be mandated by law.
