the fact that apple controls the firmware (and by definition the boot process) and are unlikely to make internals of their custom gpu public make any such port seem like a massive uphill battle.

Which is why we have Reverse Engineering — helpfully, Apple have already provided the code to config custom boot objects.

Sounds cool. I think it would be amazing to get linux up on the M1 Macs. Is the GPU derived from the Imagination IP? Those other things like the AI chip and secure enclave might be tricky to RE. By comparison how successful was the reverse engineering the PS4?

The GPU is still Imagination-ish to some extent, unclear how much. The secure enclave is not under our control (just like ME on PCs), we can mostly ignore it or use its interface for useful stuff. The AI core is interesting but is not a priority.
