That's a brilliant idea, I'm in. Would you mind doing it dual-licensed, so we can use this for OpenBSD/FreeBSD/NetBSD/DragonflyBSD/etc. as well?

Sure, happy to permissive-license whatever bespoke files I write, within the GPL limitations (not sure how much e.g. you can claim code speaking internal Linux interfaces a priori isn't a derivative work, but if you rip those parts out...)

Quite a bit of the graphics stack is permissively licensed. The BSDs all use ported versions of it.

Yeah, anything that talks to existing dual-licensed bits is fair game; I hope the BSDs can use the graphics work too!
