Time will tell, but I don't think it's impossible. Nvidia GPUs aren't exactly simple, and yet Nouveau exists. In the end it's people developing this stuff at Apple, and they have no interest in making their own jobs hard.
It will definitely be the big time sink of the entire project though, that's for sure, but I'm willing to tackle it and see what happens. The good news is we don't need perfect corner-case-for-corner-case support for a good Linux desktop experience (not many games to run...)
Sure! Basic stuff should do indeed. I just heard that PVR used to have drivers really tied to the ucode running on the GPU. And these days with GPUs running a ton of stuff in proper software (like RISC-V in nvidia GPUs) there's a chance it is more complex than nvidia. Also ...
Apple does not have that many GPUs, probably all of them (ipad/iphone/mac) are just configurations of the same one, therefore it is possible that driver and ucode is tightly coupled to juice performance. Since they control the ecosystem all users literaly run the same sw version
