I will begin work in January, so no charges will happen in December (i.e. today) either way. If the goal is met, the first charge will be on Jan 1st. I'll order an M1 Mac Mini to have it on hand ahead of time, if we hit the goal.
I also have some Linux support fixes to spend time on for my workstation, currently a Late 2015 iMac Retina 5K,. If I find a day or two for that in December, expect to see that as an appetizer, regardless of how the Patreon goes.
How much can be gleaned from the official Darwin implementation on these devices? I'm assuming most of the "useful" stuff is proprietary drivers, etc.?
Good question, I actually haven't looked yet! There are also already existing projects that have done some of the work. Obviously the first step is recon and gathering as much existing info as possible. Most of the work though (GPU) is definitely nowhere to be found.

Funny that @mervesnoi (my partner and flatmate, a current mac user) is planning to move away from macs while I'm planning to move to macs.
While I don't have a personal interest in using the hardware I would find it fascinating and put down money to read the progress and simply to see it happen for the sake of opening up what looks like a new milestone in computing performance.
