Someone asked me why I didn't put my personal web server on AWS instead of on Hetzner. Because on AWS it would be 10x more expensive for the same specs. The cloud makes *no* sense for personal 24x7 "it just does its thing" long-term workloads.

Some time around the last end of the world setting I started betting on the eventual end of adversarial cloud billing. At some point there ought to be enough competing providers to make cost control a selling point! So far I lost that bet 8 years in a row..

and yet, going against your recommendation saves on "knowing what you're doing": spending less on mucking with all that mucky software that only shines in large deployments anyway & the kind of software bugs I never see when all my machines a virtualized beyond recognition.

this part is what scares me the most about cloud offerings... the number of stories that are like “this got linked on reddit and then suddenly I had a $25k bill the next month... luckily, I asked and they waived it” is alarmingly high
