is it me or is python's ctypes really hard to use correctly? i feel like i have an easier time dealing with ownership in c++ than there
ctypes is just about tolerable for little callouts. If I'm writing more than 30 lines of it, I use Cython. Also, using callbacks with ctypes is fundamentally unsafe, so don't do it.

IIRC if your callback raises an exception, you get an stderr message, it gets swallowed, and what happens when returning back to C is effectively undefined (IIRC, undefined return value?). And of course Python code may raise an exception at any time.
