You know the mastering is quality (/s) when the audio peaks at **3dBTP**. Yes, CDs can go beyond full scale after reconstruction. Light grey area = 0dBFS. Top is "dumb" CD audio (no waveform interpolation), bottom is after oversampling/interpolation. DACs don't like this.pic.twitter.com/ODFSSZExhz

I was doing vocal extraction and this happened. Turns out I was applying 70% scaling (-3.09dB) to guard against overshoots... and this is the first song ever to exceed that. And libsndfile by default does not saturate, but *wraps* on float to int conversions (?!?!?).pic.twitter.com/YuoTL5uxDa

I also noticed that it isn't even cut properly. The song ends like this (dB view). There's a reverb tail that just gets... abruptly cut off. The remainder is quantization noise, with a slow DC wobble before settling to +0/+1 LSB. The reverb getting cut off is clearly audible...pic.twitter.com/KfY52GOHn1

I knew I was going to regret running the LUFS numbers for t his one but... yup. -5.7 dB LUFS. Loudest song I've seen so far.pic.twitter.com/cTvnpQ0PIL

Was it clipping during mastering? Seems difficult to me to get something that bad without. I think on average for a random music containing band limited signal the peak sample shouldn't be much below the true peak... but clipping it will give you lots of ringing that overshoots.

Probably a combination of aggressive limiting and some clipping at the end. It's all somewhat clipped like this, but there are no long stretches of clipping, so it's definitely had a pretty aggressive limiter applied.pic.twitter.com/0sge3hZqAO

Super Audio Cd's are pretty amazing spec wise too I think the quality mostly comes from the properly funded mastering rather than the improved sample rates https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Audio_CD …

CDs are capable of reproducing the entirety of the human hearing range in all but laboratory/anechoic chamber test conditions. You can take any SACD, convert it to CD, and it will be effectively indistinguishable in any practical setting, assuming the playback equipment is decent
