      Is the fact that it's rated for 400V the reason why it's that long or is that wholly unrelated? 47uF isn't a huge value, right?

      Yeah, because it’s 400V. The physical size tends to go up with both rated voltage and capacitance. And it’s designed for a constrained PCB footprint, so the diameter is thinner but it’s taller.

      What matters is the volume, not the height per se. You can get ones with the same rating that are short and fat.       The reason for the form factor is that it's a camera flash cap. It's designed to fit vertically on one edge of a camera as held, spanning the height of the camera. In film cameras they even used to go inside the take-up spool.

      I'm sure these days they're also used as reservoir caps in slim switchmode PSUs somewhere, but the flash cap form factor predates widespread SMPSUs :-)
