So I was the most wrong! I guess math rules the day.
IIRC (it's been years…) there is some limited amount of relative phase perception, but it's subtle enough that for synth sounds like this it doesn't matter. If freqs are far apart it matters less, for transients more. Also causes some headaches for time stretching / freq shift.
Some headaches… Understatement of the decade. A whole chapter of my dissertation is going to be about new numerical approaches to what entails from that.
