Current verdict on Linux on the 2015 Retina iMac 27": - Everything is tiny - amdgpu does not work but radeon does - BT needs a USB reset to work - No audio yet - TB2 works - Desktop is smooth - Even radeon is way better than the Ivy Bridge Intel crap I've been living with for 8y

Seriously, it feels like a new computer just because the GPU and, more importantly, the drivers aren't garbage. This is the first time I've had tearing-free (composited!) video on my main workstation in half a decade. Intel used to be good but they really dropped the ball.

I'm not moved over yet, this is a test booting my existing OS off of USB, but this will likely become my primary workstation in the coming weeks, after I get around to upgrading its internal storage and CPU.

I just realized 5K isn't actually showing up as an option for display output, but just 4K max?

Apple used a pre-release displayport standard and display controller. It has no support outside MacOS. The thing will be stuck at 4K unless you figure it out ;)

Note that not even Apple's custom AMD drivers for windows enable 5K output.

Supposedly the Boot Camp drivers added 5K support at some point. Sounds like some reverse engineering is in order. I can live with 4K mode until I get around to that though.

Just a cursory look: we know the display has 8 lanes, I'm sure Apple didn't get AMD to customize any silicon for this, and the Windows driver has these strings. I think it's just two tiles over two normal DP links with the driver making it look like one.pic.twitter.com/X4hEllHEV0
