I had been putting off the screen replacement of my ThinkPad X230 because laptops... and I just realized it's 6 screws. That's it. Took 10 minutes.

Old display has a busted column driver, but I wonder if I can use the backlight as a light box or something like that.

is this a common problem? I have a similar issue (one column dead, two more sometimes don't work too well, have to fiddle with it overall to not have horizontal glitching, it's a mess) I've been putting off doing anything about it especially as I only use it with external displa

It's common, but not really repairable without very special tools AFAIK (other than just jimmying it with pressure on the right component to "fix" it, but that's a hack)
