I had been putting off the screen replacement of my ThinkPad X230 because laptops... and I just realized it's 6 screws. That's it. Took 10 minutes.

you need x220 keyboard and palmrest (the nubs are a bit different, can also mod the x230 palmrest but they're $5), then disassemble the ribbon connector and tape over 2 pins and put it back together, connect it and flash the EC firmware (restores x220 shortcuts and extra keys)

some people report success without the tape, but those pins are used for backlight on x230 keyboard and not taping over them will short it and may possibly kill the keyboard over some period of time

When this T420 is no longer my main computing device, I'm upgrading some stuff on it too. Screen, CPU, maybe BIOS.

I got a x220 keyboard from alibaba, the mod is easy but the quality of the keyboard is much inferior to x230 one. I'd suggest to spare the money unless you find a good x220 keyboard as there are at least 3 official types out and only one is good.

I also also got one from there (or was it ebay...) and it's about comparable to the originals, I guess it depends on the seller and luck
