Old display has a busted column driver, but I wonder if I can use the backlight as a light box or something like that.

I had been putting off the screen replacement of my ThinkPad X230 because laptops... and I just realized it's 6 screws. That's it. Took 10 minutes.

How would you approach a SD card reader replacement? I have a donor board with the reader, but the bottom is made of plastic and melted easily when I removed the broken reader from my t440p with hot air.

By reader you mean the socket itself? You'd need a proper temp controlled reflow oven to not melt it. Alternatively, if you can blast the bottom of the donor board with heat (if you don't mind destroying it otherwise), that should work.

Mine isn't quite an OEM display but looks fine, OEM ones are also available but opinions differ on which one is better.
