I'm sorry, but I can never memorize which direction is upstream and which is downstream. This implies some top / bottom categorization.

for SPI I really like Main and Secondary the most as it keeps the abbreviation the same but also makes sense.

Down and Up are very ambiguous (as are head and tail). Initiator and target (like in PCIe) are great.
