Seriously, that's 6dB of dynamic range = punch that you're pissing away there. While making everything else sound like mud. What the actual fuck. In comparison, this is the global top 50. At least there are *some* songs that aren't utterly crushed here. Maybe 30%.pic.twitter.com/QGYKbVhF7V

And some Spotify releases by a friend who knows what she's doing. All of these screenshots are recorded from Spotify default playback at 100% volume. They are all normalized to equal loudness by Spotify. The smaller the waveform, the shittier and less punchy it sounds.pic.twitter.com/Z3WGDPZJ6u

On CDs at least they had the loudness excuse! A track crushed louder played at the *same peak level* as a more dynamic track will perceptually sound "better" because our shitty ears like loud. But on Spotify that is all gone, gone, gone!

wtf what does their mastering chain even look like... automated gain after the limiter??? or separate chains for each loudness level....can’t even fathom earnestly doing this

They just crush the shit out of everything to anywhere from -9dB LUFS to -6dB LUFS. The loudness war is horrible in Japan, CDs are still a big part of the market, and *nobody* makes separate streaming masters because... I guess they either don't care or don't understand?pic.twitter.com/wPP0Loo5jY

Ouch that's awful! Do they apply the same dynamic range compression to classical music? It will sound like shit if they do.

Gotta cut through their -6dB LUFS masters played at full scale on their monitors.

This is japanese mastering for you in a nutshell for the past 20+ years or so. It’s insane! And the problem is the japanese market has some cool exclusive tracks alot of the times for releases I like. So you can’t switch to another region for the proper quality! 😫😤😭
