There is a cap/plastic guide on the inner bar, which I've unsuccessfully tried to pry out as you can see.

Success! It was, in fact, just threadlocked hard into a captive nut. I just needed to apply enough torque.

Can you bind two nuts together on the exposed thread, and use those to try applying torque again?

Maybe it pushes down inward and becomes flush? ...maybe it'll only do that in a specific position in its travel?
