That's something I was worried about too when I heard about it. And who knows how long it's going to take e.g. Digidesign to port to the new architecture? The x86 migration was still recent in memory when I worked in the industry.
It sure sounds like Apple themselves moved to an out-of-process model in iOS and for new macOS stuff (e.g. AUv3) and they just couldn't care less about in-process plugin based architectures. They probably consider those deprecated. Not gonna be pretty.
I can't say that was a bad move in and of itself. Heaven knows I was tempted to run my plugin out-of-process with just a tiny in-process shim, but I'm pretty sure there would have been complaints about latency. (Discovering undocumented symbol collisions in hosts was fun...)
Probably also would have been complaints about the plugin UI not being embedded within the host UI, upon further reflection.
