Lithium ion batteries do not enjoy being fully drained *and charged again*. But as long as you're removing energy from it and never planning on putting it back in, it's fine.
I suspect this battery self-discharged long ago And if it didn't, it definitely entered battery controller panic land where its no longer possible to suck power out. Probably quite a while before the cells swelled up and broke apart the outer case
