So here's a question, particularly for POCs. Is "master" a problematic word when not juxtaposed with "slave"? My guess is not, because the word has a much broader meaning in English, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

The other question is, what words would be preferable to "slave" if you are referring to a portion of the system that is under complete control of another and has no agency of its own? It seems like almost any term would have been used to refer to a person in the same position.

In the case of glscopeclient multi-instrument sync, I use "primary" and "secondary" but this is more sensible because the instruments are largely independent.

might depend on exact connotations, like I think "master recording"/"master branch" might have more potential to be problematic than the others here (but wouldn't necessarily think either necessarily is); I'm also unqualified here see also "master's degree" which seems fine
-
I think for master recording/branch the meaning is more like "sourth of truth" / "original document", which seems unproblematic on the face of it.

git's use of `master` has questionable etymology: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2019-May/msg00066.html …

since english derived from german, I would say, it's OK, because, in german someone who mastered smth is a Meister, thereas a slave master is a Sklaventreiber (slave driver), then your someones master you're ones Herr/Gebieter in german.
-
the english language is a prime example of how shitty simplification might end up, three completely different things, one word. You might argue we germans differenciate too much, but better thus way than the other way round.

I think master as in mastery of a subject or skill should be fine... But master as in ownership and hierarchy... Not so much Unfortunately the ambiguity probably means we should change both

Master / slave has no reason to be bad unless it is in relation to people. It makes perfect sense for databases etc.
-
Nah, master/slave is bad terminology in tech because it's overloaded too much. "primary/replica" is a lot more descriptive for databases, or "active/standby" for automated failover styles in particular. master/slave doesn't say much.

It's no defunding the police, but it's nice to see progress against such entrenched practices.
