So here's a question, particularly for POCs. Is "master" a problematic word when not juxtaposed with "slave"? My guess is not, because the word has a much broader meaning in English, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Example usages: master document, audio master(ing)/master recording, master of an art/technique, master of ceremonies, git master branch, etc. All seem pretty standard and free from slavery connotations, but I'm not qualified to opine.

I'm still completely mindblown by people who actually think "blacklist" and "whitelist" are racist.

By etymology they aren't, but I can see how they hit a little too close for black folks, given the horrible context they have to deal with.

(Not a PoC.) My feeling is ‘slave’ is way over the line, but ‘master’ is a very common general-purpose word that’s not inherently connected to slavery. I don’t know of a better or equivalent term to replace usage like ‘master and replica’.

For databases active/standby or primary/replica work well enough IME.

Not a POC, also interested in the answer, same guess. I know some folks are trying to avoid it in git, using "main" instead.

I asked my wife - a POC, and she thinks the whole topic is ridiculous. What on earth makes you think that policing the word master and slave is in any way helpful?

People have different reactions to those words, and "slave" in particular has an unquestionably dark history. But also, as I've said before, usage of "master/slave" in tech is inconsistent and just bad from a technical standpoint.

I’m curious — what does master translate to in Japanese + Chinese (any)? Are these all loan words, or do they have underlying Kanji (that may imply meaning)?

Some of these have loanword and native versions in JA, e.g. master record (マスタレコード) is also 原盤 which just means "original record".
