It's not a big gap from "statistically women aren't engineers" to "you're not a real engineer because you're a women", hence we don't say the former either.
And women *are* discriminated against due to self-reinforcement feedback effects, thus pushing things in the other direction is *required* to be actually fair.
This statement in general wouldn't be good. Yet unfortunately I've also seen how things work in academia nowadays - had our funding rejected because not enough women volunteered for the research topic (officially!). Actual research topic was not discussed according to postdocs1/2
Female students were written into positions they didn't even have interest in just just to make statistics better. And by no means do we have few female researchers here - they were just not inteterested in this particular topic. This is not how things should work.
