I see a lot of “I’m white + face racism in Japan!” tweets + I understand what they’re trying to say but that’s not it. Housing discrimination is real + terrible but if you get denied an apartment it’s because you’re foreign not because you’re white specifically. That’s Xenophobia

I fully agree that other races have it worse and have *direct* racism attached to them, but that doesn't mean white people don't experience racism at all in Japan either, and it can all be lumped under xenophobia instead. Xenophobia and racism are often linked, after all.
-
Even if they're not linked they're both extremely bad

Okay I still don’t think you get my entire point so maybe I didn’t explain it well. We all get stopped by police right? If they stop a white man, he’s thinking “this gaijin might be overstating his visa” if he stops a black man it’s “this KOKUJIN is probably selling drugs”
-
Fully agree, and my point is that the white dude got tagged as a gaijin because he's white, which is still a form of racism underlying the xenophobia :-)

I do get what you’re saying though, it’s almost parallel to what I’m saying so I’m sorry if I’m confusing with my wording

-
I think it's just a wording thing. Other races experience overt racism, white people get (in my view) something that qualifies as racism too but I agree that it's on a different level.

Nope, not the same. I've been straight up told by MANY Japanese people that I'm "a good foreigner" because I'm WHITE, THIN, PRETTY & POLITE. I'm pretty sure polite gets thrown in because they perceive me doing something differently than they would if I were Black, or Chinese, etc

I do know a white girl who was pretty brutally attacked by a Japanese man, and she even says that what he was screaming while he hit her was vile insults about women and foreigners. He never called her white.
