I'm pretty sure I had a chat with @whitequark about Dave years ago and I was trying to play both sides / ended up not really speaking up. I'm sorry it took me this long. The guy's an asshole.

This needs to go on the thread: Dave's opinion on women and STEM: they are biologically less suited/interested, and also women engineers only get on the news because they're women, not because their accomplishments.https://twitter.com/new299/status/1269199976548036609 …

Update: Dave DMed me and we had a chat. - He didn't know more about the Hungarian PM and deleted the tweet after being told - The trap joke in the EEVblog #1213 thumbnail was unintentional, he agreed to change it - He's doesn't follow the BLM news, that was unintentional too

However, the other issues still stand; he still refuses to change his "tranny" language, and stands by his takes on the forum, though he says he rejects outright transphobia, and asks trans people with a problem with "tranny" to email him to let him know.

Because it directly hurts part of his potential audience, and alienates another part that cares about the former.

Why don’t you build an audience and talk like you like and let other people be. You know... tolerant against other opinions.

Because what he's doing hurts people, and his opinions are actively harmful towards minorities in STEM. That's like saying "let Trump be, he just has opinions". Opinions make a difference.

Opinions spread among people, and influence people's actions. Like that part where he says women engineers ended up on magazine covers because they're women. Words also directly do harm. Like using "tranny", which isn't just offensive but *hurtful* towards trans people.

(and don't give me some "words can't do harm" nonsense; just ask any psychologist whether the words people utter can directly hurt people and even drive them to suicide)
