Nah, at this point, the word is so associated with being a slur towards trans people, that any other connotation is basically gone. Personally, I'm trans and I don't care a lot about it, but his usage sticks out as deliberately anachronistic
This. It's one thing to not know, and another to not care once you're made aware of the connotations. He may be Australian where that word may be common in EE contexts, but he's producing content for a worldwide English-speaking audience. And it's not okay in others.

I'm Spanish, and I certainly wouldn't start using the word "negro" for the color black when I'm speaking English. And I'll joke with Japanese people that us Spaniards say "chin-chin" for a drinking toast, but I won't just use it unprompted, because it does mean dick in Japanese.

And I had a Spanish language YouTube channel, and there are words that are inoffensive in Spain but offensive (esp. to a minority) in Latin America, yeah, I'd avoid them, and certainly not make them a running gag.
