I'm guessing the audio bit is correct, and this is a standard webcam chip, because webcams have microphones. So you only got the (useless) audio half of the device due to the other driver.

Does make a lot of sense! Rift could have always gotten custom chips rolled so this comes across as pure laziness

It doesn't make any sense to roll custom chips when an off the shelf one will do the job. At *least* they should've changed the VID/PID which is possible on ~all chips with an EEPROM. Disabling the audio part may or may not be possible, depending on the chip.
