      It's still legible because the same 8- or 16-byte block is encrypted the same way, so any time you have clean patterns in the image, you get clean patterns in the encrypted version. ECB mode is just a substitution cipher, and substitution ciphers are no good.

          CTR is similarly efficient and is the generally recommended mode. no real excuse for ECB
