Never thought maid-dragon pixelart in terminal guy would go on and say the words I struggled to find on this. Thanks. Also this whole apology / closing CB statement is bs but for so many other reasons.
But yeah, it's just that you need two opposite characters (U+2580 and U+2584) to be able to have both halves transparent individually, but those two characters aren't always exact opposites in all fonts, or the same height, and it ends up looking weird.

wait is that true because when developing our own terminal emulator, indeed the blocks would look like they had gaps, which i assumed had to do with how we rendered the characters

I think it's both? It definitely depends on the font, but also antialiasing kind of messes things up and it's a good test case for font rendering. Might be worth trying the same font on another terminal emulator and comparing.
