FWIW, I've been using IDA for over 15 years and there's a 0% chance I'd buy IDA Home. I have the IDA interface in my muscle memory, but that license is laughably bad. Ghidra and Hopper may not be as good as IDA, but I'm moving over to them fully.

I stopped renewing my IDA Pro license last year (good riddance; every time there was *some* complaint about the payment method). Sure, it takes a while to get used to a new app, but the bang per buck of IDA is just laughably bad, especially given the competition.

It's been a while since I had one that wasn't purchased by work. I remember trying to throw $10k+ at them for a personal Hex-Rays license and an upgrade on my Advanced copy that had lapsed, and being (essentially) told to piss off.

My first interaction with them was an email from
@ilfak himself, literally "Please explain.", because my country and IP didn't match. He had me send him a scan of my Japanese resident card, because clearly I must be trying to scam them out of VAT and not just traveling.2 replies 1 retweet 27 likes -
Yeah, that sounds about right. Turns out, if you spend decades treating your core demographic like shit, someone will come through and treat them (very slightly) better and eat your lunch.

I'm sorry if you got offended but we treat our customers with due respect.

Ilfak, "Please explain." is not respectful customer service. Especially not when I'm paying $1129.pic.twitter.com/HZFcBgInqu

This should have read something like "Your country and the IP address that made the order triggered a fraud alert. We need some additional documentation to make sure you are VAT exempt in order to issue this license." Or "We need to confirm you are a Japanese resident" even.

That said, I imagine the user base of this product is small enough that they'd be able to do a small amount of research and see you live in Japan, if they really needed the documentation for tax reasons.

If this was your first renewal since moving then maybe a simple "We see your previously registered country was in the EU, and just wanted to make sure that Japan is your new country of residence to make sure we charge VAT properly."

It was my first purchase; however, after having proof of my Japanese residency, when I tried to renew later, they still complained when I tried to use a Spanish credit card (which I was just using because I get better rates).

I've never had that kind of scrutiny for avoiding VAT. I bought a SIM at an Orange store and they waived VAT once I said I was an American on business. No verification or anything, they took my (non-British) word for it :\

Also wouldn't you be the one slapped with a penalty if you actually owed VAT and skirted it? That's how tax exempt works here.
